How to Sage: Though you will hear many varying opinions on the topic, the purpose and proper methodology of sage burning is in the eye of the beholder. There is no incorrect way to sage, provided you don't burn anything down. Safety first.

Prepare: Have a large bowl of sand or water nearby to douse the smudge stick when you are done. Sage burns very hot, and somewhat unpredictably, so use suitable caution. Do not perform a smudge ceremony in areas containing portable oxygen tanks, gas lines, etc.
Ignite: Light the end of the sage stick using a lit candle. The flame should naturally extinguish itself after a time. If preferred, with your other hand carry a bowl or plate to catch any errant hot ashes.
Distribute Smoke: Wave the smudge stick around in a slow, circular fashion as you walk from room to room. Fill the entire living space with a small amount of smoke. Optionally, you may think, speak or sing a positive incantation of your choosing.
Extinguish: When you have completed your task, completely douse the burning end of the smudge stick in either sand or water. Make certain no burning embers remain.
